These leaders understood that American healthcare is delivered through local, community-based hospitals like their own. However, as individual institutions and regional networks, these community hospitals could not keep pace with the spectrum of advances in the practice of medicine. Rather than function as islands, they needed to unite to share information about patient outcomes and best practices, and gain market clout and economies of scale.
