Vision for Healthcare
The 2,200 community hospital members and staff of the Premier healthcare alliance are dedicated to a core purpose, to improve the health of the communities served by the alliance members. In fact, over 40 percent of American patients are treated in Premier alliance hospitals.
These hospitals work together through Premier to improve the quality and reduce the cost of care delivered to those patients. Premier alliance’s envisioned future is that by the year 2020, we will have changed to world’s view of U.S. healthcare to “the best and most cost-effective” at sustaining the good health of populations.
This is accomplished by our hospitals using tools and forums created through Premier that collect, analyze and share knowledge nationwide. These tools and meetings include:
- Nearly two dozen clinical committees that share information and make decisions on what products are needed to best care for patients
- The largest clinical database in the world that enables comparisons of patient outcomes and costs by doctor and hospital clinical service areas
- A technology solution that enables hospitals to monitor and cost-effectively prevent and treat infections
- National and regional meetings designed to help our members share best practices and learn from the high performing leaders.
- One of the largest insurance collaboratives in the nation where hospitals manage their liability risks by pooling their funds together and sharing knowledge to reduce risk.
- A Safety Institute that is the nation's leading resource for healthcare safety information.
This knowledge enables hospitals to identify improvement opportunities, best practices for getting there, and a means to monitor progress against one another on an ongoing basis.
The result is care delivered based on decisions made at the local level but informed by knowledge shared among hundreds of hospitals nationwide. This assures a faster identification and sharing of best practices. The Premier healthcare alliance does not own the hospitals in its alliance. Rather, the hospitals created and own Premier as a way to improve the quality and reduce the costs of the care they deliver.
Premier healthcare alliance success depends in part on actions taken in Congress and the White House. Alliance members work together to develop policies and advocate for those policies to lawmakers. Premier's Quality Agenda includes positions on the following issues:
