Advocacy: On the Issues
Premier Advocacy is the Washington D.C.- based arm of the Premier healthcare alliance. It is committed to impacting national policy to improve healthcare quality, reduce costs and ensure adequate hospital reimbursement. Advocacy strives to create an environment most conducive to member hospitals’ delivery of safe, high-quality, cost-effective care. As reflected in its products and services, Premier Advocacy is member-driven, grassroots oriented, and value-based. Premier Advocacy works with the leaders in its hospital members and federal affairs staff to develop and communicate to Senators and Representatives positions on issues impacting the quality and costs of care delivered to American patients.

The Premier healthcare alliance and two of its Oregon hospital members today honored U.S. Representative Darlene Hooley (D-OR) for her leadership in advancing legislation to include unique device identification (UDI) language in last year’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bill. Full story.

- Senator Wyden commends Oregon Non-Profit hospitals for $32 million savings in 2007, through the Premier healthcare alliance.
U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) met with CEO’s of 11 non-profit Oregon hospitals to discuss healthcare issues, specifically how those hospitals saved $32 million in savings in 2007 through the Premier healthcare alliance. The Senator praised the hospitals for improving the health of Oregon communities while safely lowering costs. Full story.

- Leading hospitals, healthcare experts collaborate to eliminate preventable birth injuries
Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WVA) joined the Premier healthcare alliance for the launch of an innovative hospital collaborative that seeks to eliminate preventable birth injuries in the United States. Currently there are three birth injuries for every 1,000 births, many of which are preventable. To hospitals nationwide, the only acceptable number is zero. The Premier Perinatal Safety Initiative will identify best practices and measures to significantly lower the incidence of certain infrequent though serious injuries that could result in birth asphyxia or permanent neurologic disability.
